What is the quickest way to get from downtown Toronto to Hamilton?

I work in downtown Toronto, near Union Station and I am getting off work at 4pm. I was wondering if anyone knows a way to bypass the rush hour traffic on the Gardier Expressway to get to Hamilton faster. Or if anyone knows another way to get to Hamilton, it would be lovely.

By car there is no easy way at that time. You can try the Lakeshore or Front over to Bathurst and then up to maybe Queen as opposed to the Gardiner to get out of the city core. My personal experience is that if you can make it out of the core and to Etobicoke ( 427 off ramp ) by 4:00, you can just beat the afternoon rush. If you’re there at 4:30, you’re stuck in traffic for a long time. If you can leave 30 minutes earlier, you may be able to beat the worst of the commuter traffic woes. If not, let me just wish you good luck…

The only way you will avoid the traffic is taking the GO train (Lakeshore West line), it runs often during that time and you can drive to the GO parking lot – its free – (Aldershot station).
